United States domain .us vs .com
Depending on your type of business going with a country code (cc) domain or a top level domain (tld) can be easy or complicated.
You basically have three options:
- If you operate domestically in United States you should definitely go with .us. The domain itself tells search engines to index your site to be displayed in United States, so you have a better chance of being found by your customers without any work from your part. If it was .com, search engines would try to show your website everywhere even to people who could never buy from you.
- If you operate internationally, worldwide, you should use a top level domain like .com. The domain will be shown everywhere, to everyone that searches for things related to your business (provided you do good SEO of course). Search engines will assume nothing.
- If you are a big corporation or franchise and operate both domestically and internationally you can buy multiple domains, .us to use with the local version of your website and .com or another cc to use internationally. Google does just that with domains both google.ca and google.com that link to the same search engine but one calibrated for specific Canada results and the other to the whole world.
